Lady in red...

Red seems to be color of the love because our heart is red. From Coco Chanel to Jean Paul Gaultier, fashion designers around the world have used red as the icing of every collection; even Valentino made it his personal signature.

Is this fascination with the colour red just a convention? According to recent studies, red makes women more attractive to men. Daniela Niesta, psychology researcher from Rochester University and co-author of the study said that red is used in the context of love and passion because it is related to our primitive instincts.

Firstly, the researchers showed a group of men pictures of women placed in different backgrounds—red, white, green, grey—, being the women in red background higher rated, so more attractive, more kissable and more desirable.

Secondly, they investigated how red influence on a date. A woman in a red dress has more possibilities to go out on a date. Men were also more willing to spent more money in a dinner or gifts for the woman in red.

This same study demonstrated that women don´t find attractive other women wearing red, so the phenomenon only occurs in men.

Finally Niesta said that they haven´t tested if the phenomenon works the other way around, but I believe that a man in a red Ferrari is always attractive, isn´t he?

  1. I agreed with you. Once I watched a research (on Tv obviously), about how human beings are still connected with their own instinct without even notice it! Even perfumes nowadays are made of pheromones that makes the one who use them more attractive to the opposite sex.
Now I can really understand how marketing and all works, and how we are not aware of our own thoughts.
I think this shows us that we are still just animals, even if we don't want to face it.

  2. I agree with Laura there is still so much to learn about ourselves. Now my question for you Ramón, is if and how has technology being used to shed light on this discovery? Remember in the entries you are still required to make the connection with technology as what we did in class today.

    1. I think that this study is related to neuroscience, it tries to explain how our brain works in front of certain impulses, in this case, the scientific relation between red color and male physical atraction to women wearing it .

  3. I liked the topic of your entry. I’ve always thought that the colour red has something special that makes people, women and men, to look more attractive. But, personally, I believe that blonde women look more attractive when using it.

Moreover, I would like to expand your idea and reflect on the influence that other colours have on us. For example, it said that the green colour, one of my favorites, provides the sense of nature; therefore, it helps to balance the stress. Also, the brown colour, which I tend to use a lot, gives the sense of stability, and so on and so forth.

I strongly believe that colours have a huge influence on us and they can really help us to deal with whichever situation!

    1. Psicologyst arround the world agree that colours actually have an influence in our behavior, even unconciously. One example of that is Feng-shui--I know that it is not a science--, but it works organising and focusing energies through elements (fire, water, wood, earth, metal), positions of those elements, colours and smells.

  4. I had read and watched documentaries about this topic before; actually, there are many features that make women more desirable to the opposite sex. For instance, red lips are more kissable, wide hips appeal to maternity and even long hair is attractive for them (according to the studies). Personally, I think that whoever wearing red is attractive because this color shows off the person's confidence and that's a good attribute to anyone. On the other hand, a man in a Ferrari is always attractive, in spite of the color of the car! In this case the one who is working is our accounting assistant, not our brain!

  5. To be honest the red colour is one of my favourites, for me it's attractive, women wearing red clothes catch my attention inmediatly but there is something more important than sight (in terms of male-female attraction) the smell, Perfumes and pheromones are a crucial element when you face a person. Your body (brain) analyses by smelling the subject characteristics through sweat. You may say that it is a chemical choose but I remember a TV documentary about that, where some test subjects smell the t-shirt from a set of women (then the other way round) in that way the body seemed to select to most suitable person from another, leaving the mind out of the task ... crazy. Haw-Haw.
