Chile: Government wants to eliminate extra cell phone call charge between operators. Getting closer to a better connection.

This is one of those historical moments in which costumers interests are protected by the government. The idea is simple, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications has expressed his intention that due to 2014 every call made along the national territory shall be considered a local call. For this purpose the numbers have started to be changed, so that both cell phone and landlines should have the same amount of digits. This may also mean that in the future users could be able to have the same number no matter the technological platform,  either at home or inside your pocket.

Specialists have pointed out that families are more and more into using free alternatives offered by mobile devices. The web is full of tools that facilitate our contact and there is no justification for extra charges, not if we are already paying for our internet connection. It would not be crazy to say that someday our cell phone calls will be also made through the internet, just like Skype does.

This kind of initiative is appreciated by the community, which is always looking for ways in which to stay better connected and low costs. The question is whether the government will be able to take this to a good end. What do you think the reaction of telephone service providers will be?

  1. Good topic my dear match, but remember that companies in general never lose money, so, of course they will find the way to keep on earning the same amount of money. Also, the government has not said yet whether will be a subsidy or some kind of compensation in exchange of.
