Junk food, prepare your ... self!

The United States’ government has declared war to an enemy that kills people every single day, an enemy that is even supported by the biggest brands of the world. An enemy that has been able to evade our national defenses and begin his cruel round of murderers. Of course I’m talking about obesity.

In 2010, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) published a study which state that 35.7 % of American adults and 17% of children are obese. Picture it! More than one per three people has this disease, which has been described as the major health issue of the recent decades. And the for me, the worst part is that the so-called most powerful country in the world’s biggest cultural exportation apart from music and sports, is junk food: McDonald, KFC, Coke, Burger King, Subway, etc.

Nowadays is really hard for us (young people) to imagine a normal day without junk food, and at I bet that at least one or two times per week, we “pay a visit” to one of these fast-food restaurants; with the arrival of malls to our cities, and this “study or sleep” lifestyle that university imposes us, junk food is the answer to that hunger that affects us in the middle of the day.

Chilean and American academic students should know best that our health is our responsibility, and that we can’t let those devilish chains of fast food restaurants to “kill us slowly”. United States is on a critical point with this issue, and our country’s government is not doing really good campaigns to ensure our kids with good health, the only answer is to be an example. For an October without junk food!.

  1. Obesity is a severe problem, that is affecting more and more people everyday. As you have said, junk food, bad eating habits and also, lack of sports activity are some of the causes that have spread obesity around the world ( even in those countries which seem to be poor. Apart from that, junk food is a very cheap product, so its afordable to almost all the population. As you said it is a very hard problems that mostgovernment tend to ignore

  2. I do not think that the government should take responsability in this regard. Sure, the government somehow tries to tackle the problem by creating campaigns, but it is not obliged to do so. I believe that families should encourage their children to eat healthy food. If a mother or a father of a family cooks healthy and delicious food, his or her children will have a good eating culture,; thus, obesity might be a fantasy, not a reality.

  3. I agree with Joaquín. I think that families have to take responsabilities in this issue. Each father or mother has to take care of children. As far as I know, most families are used to eating junk food because is easy to prepar, faster, and cheaper; nevertheless, it is the most harmful food for people's health. Obviously, the goverment can help to tackle this problem, but at the end they cannot force people to eat healthier food. I think that maybe campaigns, like talks, in the schools (with students and parents) can help in order to become aware of this problem.

    1. I understand your point, I also think that parents should have the responsibility of look after their children and the way the eat; BUT!, there are a lot of schools where junk food CANNOT be sold, and that rule is part of a governmental program. Parents can't be keeping an eye on their kids all the time, and a starving young man with some money, most of the time is going to get some junk food, unless we vanquish that possibility of getting it.
