"Fire" to the books

My sister travelled to the USA 2 months ago to a meeting in Atlanta. So my family and I took the opportunity to buy some things on Amazon and ask the shipping to my sis’s hotel. I bought little and cheap things but my aunt did a really smart purchase. She invested on a “Kindle Fire”.
At first I considered that a kindle was almost unuseful for a 54 years old lady but as soon as the tablet was in her hands, she did her best to learn how to use it. After 2 or 3 weeks she already knew how to buy books and how to check her e-mail from the famous “kindle” I was amazed and I was actually happy for her and her evolution on technology. My little 7 years old nephew that lives with her had to read a book for school and asked me if the book was on the kindle because he didn’t like to read from the paper. It was incredible that a 7 years old boy asked me something like that.  And I realized that MAYBE when my nephew Vicente is 23 years old like me, the printed book won’t even exist and it will be just a piece of collection or something like that.
I am wondering if that’s good or bad for our society, to evolve to an each day more technologized world where essential things in life will be lost year after year and something as simple as a notebook or a book will be part of the past of our lives to leave the machines rule us.

  1. Hi Camila! I have just read your entry and I really like it! It is great to see people making the best of technology devices, like your aunt, because it means that, differently from others, tablets are a useful device. One that can help us a lot.
However, I hope we don´t stop reading books (the real ones). I think they are great and all of them have something special. Well, by commenting here I also wanted to invete you to read one of my entries, the one which is tittled "Technological progress...?" I think it is related to this entry. Bye!

  2. Yes, I agree with Nicolas that this is a a really interesting entry because it is calling us to reflect on the consequences of technological development.
It is rare but not impossible to think that in a near future things like books or printed newspapers will not exist any more since they could be replaced by on-line versions. But it is just a matter of nostalgia.
It would be advisable we start get used to this kind of situations since the world is changing all the time thank to technology.

  3. I believe that whether people read books and newspapers online or not will depend on their tastes. I will use my brother as an example: he bought a Sony e-reader, and he loves reading books on it while he is travelling; however, he also buys lots of books. One day I asked him why he does that, and my brother answered that there is nothing more satisfying than reading the hard copy of his favorite novel and being able to have a little library in his apartment, which is something that many houses lack of. So, I do not think that the indistry is having a hard time, since there are still many avid readers who really like to read from the original copy.

  4. I like reading, and I like buying books because I think that reading in a computer tires me and it is not the same. However,I can see that most of the time people like to read from laptops, or any other technological device. I can hardly see and know people who buy books. Maybe it is because books are very expensive and sometimes inaccessible. You can have them in your computer for free. I think that if books were cheaper, this would be different.
