When one
thinks about society’s current needs, the words technology and electronic devices
pop up in people’s minds almost instantly. Nowadays, it is very hard to find
someone striving for food, a healthy life, or decent education; instead, people
have misplaced their needs and have tried to fulfill wants that include electronic
devices.
How can we
check that? A quick look at today’s society will suffice to prove the previous
idea. It is commonly known that most of the people living in shanty towns in
Chile spend a lot of money on electronic devices such as cell phones, plasma
TVs, and radios. However, they live in run down houses that in most cases lack
of basic services like clean water.
Evidence
that can also be observed in the streets is the use of expensive clothes and
luxury items that many people carry. Wearing Lacoste shoes, Adidas hoodies,
and iPhones are the new code for many
Chileans who want to show off their latest acquisitions.
But, Chile
is not the only place where technology seems to be considered a basic need. According
to the website http://247wallst.com, Americans also like to spend money
on TV, radio, and sound equipment. (Click on this link to access the article.)
All in all,
one may say that this reality results from different factors like the price
drop that most of electronic devices undergo from time to time; or the
advertisements which encourage people to buy more and more; or the social
pressure of “shining” among the others. But, is it necessary? Have you noticed
this phenomenon? What would you do to change it?
