A few months ago, here in
Chile, a lot of people reacted against the Abortion Law claiming that “women
are supposed to lend their body to the fetus.” Well, I’m not pro abortion, but
I think we should decide what we want to do with our body because IT’S OUR BODY!
No one else should decide for us. This struggle is not new at all; in fact,
during the early XX Century some brave women decided to raise their voices and
defend their right of birth control.
A woman controlling her
menstrual cycle was an aberration for the Church and the US morality; for this
reason, the Birth Control Movement reacted against both of them arguing that
pleasure and procreation were two separate things. At the end, thanks to these
women who were capable of defend their rights, 52 years ago the birth-control
pills were created, alleviating millions of women around the World. Is because
of the pills that women in the workforce and in college increased, as well as
their possibilities of having a life outside their houses. Pills give women a
real chance to be part of the world since they could decide whether or not have
a baby, when get pregnant and how many children they want.
Since 1950 plenty birth
control methods have been created, from the regular pills to the new female
condoms, increasing the possibilities that women have to decide what to do with
their body and time. I’d like to clarify that it is not a selfish decision because
we have to decide when we are prepare to have a baby, that is a huge decision
and has a great impact in our lives. Can you imagine the world without
contraceptives? A huge mess! Just imagine how many 15-years-old pregnant girls would be walking along the streets!
