Smokers miss more work than nonsmokers


For decades, It has been shown in countless studies the damage produced by cigarette smoking. For instance, cigarettes increase stomach inflammation, ulcers and gastritis. However, there is a study that shows something that I am pretty sure you are not aware of. A report published by the magazine “Addiciton” revealed that smokers miss work two to three days more per year than non-smokers. Only in the UK this issue has cost nearly 400 million pounds thousand, one thousand 700 million euros a year.

The data comes from a review of 29 independent studies conducted between 1960 and 2011 in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, United States and Japan, with a total of more than 71,000 public sector workers and private. The authors of the report, members of the University of Nottingham (UK), focused on the smoking habits of workers, and analyzed the frequency with which these were absent in the last two years. Smokers were 33% more likely to miss work than nonsmokers, and they missed an average of 2.7 working days per year, as explained Jo Leonardi-Bee, author of the report. They also calculated that current smokers were 19% more likely to miss work than former smokers, so encourage them to leave the snuff may also cause "considerable cost savings for workers."

In addition, the study has also shown that children who live with smokers are also more likely to miss school. A passive smoking has been associated with increased susceptibility to the development of various diseases, from asthma to heart attacks, which makes workers must miss work more often to stay home with their sick.

  1. I enjoyed reading your entry! As you may know, I do smoke, but I don’t consider myself as an addicted, given the fact that I don’t depend on smoking—I just like it and I do it when I want to do it.

    Encouraged by your topic, I looked for more information about this addiction—that sounded weird for me—and I found that people who live with a mental illness have a very high rate of smoking—a very good reason to avoid going to work, don’t you think?. A study by The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 44.3 percent of all cigarettes in America are consumed by individuals who live with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders. The reason why this occurs may be related to a combination of brain effects, psychological effects and the social world in which we live.

    Well, I may have a mental disorder hidden inside my brain, who knows… But I can live with that!

  2. Really interesting. Something to add to t¿your point is that, according to Douglas Levy, a tobacco and public health researcher from the Boston Harvard Medical School,the tobacco issue not only affects the individual, "it affects the economy as well."

    I find that statement right in the way smoking affect your pocket directly. I don't know if carrying you to spend money you don't have on it, depending on the case...I'm glad it is not yours, isn't it?

    The thing is that it affects the money you have, but also the income of tobacco companies. Don't misunderstand me, I don't smoke, so I don't care about those companies, but I cannot deny the fact that the less consumers, the lesser income they get.

  3. You were right, I didn't know about that! But if I think in my case, I do lose plenty hours a year smoking (even more when I’m studying or working!). It seems to be a couple of minutes each time you lit a cigarette, but at the end the amount of time wasted is huge.
    I also didn't know what Sergio said about the connection between smoking and mental illnesses, anyway, I guess we all have a type of undiscovered disorder; I mean, the tobacco addiction is a problem itself!
    I'd like to add that the video was quite shocking, I had read and watched reports against this terrible habit but this case was kind of scary. Sadly, stop this addiction isn't that easy!
