Talking through scan!

A vegetative men in Canada showed to his doctors that we was not suffering any pain by monitoring his brain activity while a scanner test.
This discovery showed up that Scott Routley had brain activity, that he has a concious and thinking brain and that he is not just “a plant” lying in a bed.
It is believed that this descovery is going to revolutionize the medicine and a lot of things and theories are going to be changed. With this new information now doctors are going to be able to improve vegetable pacients’s life by providing medicines for the pain that they may be suffering without the doctor’s knowledge.
It is hard to imagine our lives like that. With no possibilities of moving a hand or to speak with your family. If you were in ths condition, would you like to be tested to discover if you need something? Would you like to be leaved in peace with no more tests? Or would you like to be killed (with euthanasia) just to end up your suffering?

  1. This is an amazing breakthrough! People with this type of disability has the right to use any device or method possible to improve their quality of life or to, at least, reduce their pain. Moreover, they also need to have the right to choose whether to die or keep living in that condition. For this reason, it might be useful to find a way of knowing what they really want to do with their lives.
Some people think that vegetative people are not emotionally capable of making that kind of decision, but at least they should have the opportunity to express their opinions about it.

  2. I agree with you Adolfo, It would be great to help these people and provide a better life condition to them. However I don´t think this will be possible in the short time. To know if they are suffering any pain is more easy to know because pain can be measured by a endorphin liberated by the body, but there is no way to read and understand what a person wants to say only by observing his/her brain. But I repeat, it would be great to know what they think.

  3. Nico, if you see the link attachet to the entry, you will se that through the sca doctor are able to "read" this man's mind. So this is asomething that is happening now. The only limitation is that the man is only capable to say "yes" or "no" because that is the most obvious thing for the scan to read.

  4. I agree with my classmates, this is such an amazing breakthrough! I would be usefull not only for people in a vegetative state but also for people with Locked-in syndrome. Here is the information if need to know about it : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locked-in_syndrome

I would be amazing to know how this people feel and to help them with everything they need.

    Amazing!
