Technology in Sports… Is it always a good idea?

Sports have undergone a lot of changes during the last decade. Lots of these changes are the result of the technologies that have been integrated into sports. New technologic equipment, the best cameras capturing the movements of the sportsmen, new shoes designed to specific surfaces, etc. These are some of the technological stuffs that have improved sports. When technology is used on sports, all the participants improve their performances. The sportsmen may perform better, the judges or referees can make better decisions and spectators can appreciate better what they want to see from several angles and lots of times, even in slow motion. However, there is a specific technology that it is causing controversy among the specialists and the fans of a sport. Have you heard about Goal-line Technology on football games?
Goal-line Technology is a device that determines when the ball has completely crossed the goal line, this device will assist the referee in calling a goal or not. All this, as a result of the huge amount of goals called without the ball had crossed the goal line during important football games. What does FIFA have to say about this? Well, they were against this implementation until last year. But now, they have already accepted the implementation of the Goal-line Tech in order to avoid these controversies. Indeed, since July this year, three different systems are being tested by the FIFA (Cairos GLT System, GoalMinder and Hawk-eye). The one with the best results will be chosen to be implemented in the next FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
While advocates for this new technology say that it would reduce refereeing errors, most of the fans of football remain incredulous and don´t support the idea of including this technology into football. The main argument to be against the implementation is that they consider the errors of the referee to be “part of the game.” When criticizing, they also point out that this technology would remove the beautiful enjoyment of debating such controversial mistakes of the referees that will never allow an arrangement among the fans. Do you think this is correct? What would yo do if you were the FIFA´s chairman?

  1. Great, I really found awesome that technology can help to improve sports performance. I’m not talking just about shoes or balloons, I mean in terms of judging devices. As you said before the goal-line would be an instrument that will state clearly which team has score. I remember when the “eagle-eye” came to tennis courts, from that time and up to now when there is a doubtful point the, the eagle-eye catch the exactly moment when the ball touch the ground. The problem comes when technology is use to cheat in a match, which is morally wrong.

  2. yeah! I hope that cheating does not happen, but we can wait everything from sports. I don´t know much about all the sports, but at least in football, it is very probable that cheating keep on happening. Specially considering that the FIFA´s chairman is a gangster! hahaha... we all know that football is the biggest enterprise of the world, and that they have already cheated, specially in Italy, where Milan AC and Juventus have been found guilty of paying the referees for winning the games. Of course they were punished, but you know that money is the king of kings, so I´m pretty sure that this will keep on happenning.
    Thanks for commenting Felipe!
